Jake Doleschal is the Finish the Race community leader for the Victorian electorate of Flinders. As a young, passionate advocate who uses his voice to promote social change in a number of different areas, we thought we would let Jake share with you what makes him such a driven activist.

JakeWhy are you passionate about being an advocate for the poor?
My motivation to advocate with the poor is rooted in the gospel of Christ. Indigenous activist Lilla Watson summarizes the essence of this universal call in which Christ beckons us to join, in her response to those coming to help her community - “if you have come here to help me, you are wasting our time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together”. I advocate with the poor because when we are unified as a global body, we cannot help but advocate for change!

When did you first become involved with Micah Challenge?
My first experience with the Micah Challenge was attending Voices for Justice in 2012 (which was a great experience… but quite cold!)

Why have you committed to be a part of Finish the Race?
I am a part of Finish the Race because Micah Challenge provide an avenue for faith communities to effectively engage in raising awareness and advocating for global change, and Finish the Race is a great opportunity to further spread the message and invite others to join with us!

Other than being a Finish the Race community leader, what else do you do with your time?
I work at New Peninsula Baptist Church as a kids ministry coordinator (which is amazing! Kids have such an easy time understanding our call to justice - I suppose that’s why Jesus said the kingdom belongs to such as these!), I’m also studying theology, have an amazing girlfriend, have recently started up the hobby of sewing my own clothes, and have been feeding myself on $2 a day for all of May (checkout Live Below the Line).

What will you be doing as part of the Finish the Race campaign?
Engaging in schools and churches as much as possible is going to be our first step! As for what our event is going to look like, you might have to check back in for that one (keep an eye on our interactive events map to see what Flinders is up to!)

What aspect of the Finish the Race campaign are you most excited about being involved in?
Seeing our local community educated and empowered to continue to be a voice of change, committing to advocate for a fairer political climate and continuing to inspire others, is definitely what I am most excited to see throughout this campaign!

What are you hoping the impact of the campaign will be?
On a small scale, I’m hoping to see local churches, school and communities engage more deeply with these global issues. On a larger scale… it’s an election year! So the impact of this campaign could be limitless!

What would you say to others who are thinking about becoming involved with Finish the Race?
Do it! It’s a great opportunity to join a community of like minded people, when we are isolated, advocating for justice can be difficult, but united it’s a blast! And hey, we just might see some change happen too!
